Peniche is located in the center of west Portugal, 89 km north away of the country capital, Lisbon, and it is a sweet combination between sports, nature, stylish and comfort.

Peniche is a zone of great natural beauty and an amazing landscape, with a vast patrimony, both cultural and religious.

From the magnificent beaches of the entire coast, perfect to practicing water sports, to the cultural patrimony, with outstanding blockhouses and religious monuments, Peniche presents a diversity of tourist resources including a rich and varied gastronomy with recipes of fish and shellfish, and a diversified craft-work, featuring the famous “Trimmed Lace.“

The region is Portugal’s main surfing area and it is considered by many, the true Portuguese surf capital.

The variety of surf spots available provides a unique consistency in Portugal, and the WSL World Tour Championship presence in October are the main reference for the region.

Peniche is popular for its long, fabulous town beach, nearby surf strands and also as a jumping-off point for the beautiful Ilhas Berlengas nature reserve.

Outdoors enthusiasts will love the beaches east of town, where lessons and rentals for every sport under the sun are available. Peniche always have a beach where the wind is off shore, creating perfect waves. You can find more than 20 surf spots for all level of surfer, from beginner to advanced.

The surrounding perimeter of Cabo Carvoeiro (Peniche) is a landscape dominated by a succession of limestone and associated rock formations, of the Lower Jurassic Period (between 200 and 180 million years ago).

The existing rock formations are exceptionally well exposed, thus allowing close observation of the continuous and detailed sediment record that unfolds the geological history of Portugal during this period.

The walled historic centre makes for pleasant strolling, and the seaside fort where Salazar’s regime detained political prisoners is a must-see for anyone interested in Portuguese history. Artisan lovers will enjoy Peniche's speciality, handmade lace, and you can watch the nimble fingers of women at work.

Not to miss the visit to the Peniche Fortress, that has important features: not only the typical star shaped form, but also the rounded bastion – the first fortification built in the Peniche peninsula – the Sentinel Tower.

The Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Consolação, built in 1641, is integrated into a an ample defense and fortification strategy for the coast line of the Peniche region, with great improvements after restoration.
